There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when young people stop learning about a problem and start becoming part of its solution. That’s exactly what unfolded over the past few months as members of The Antigua and Barbuda Girl Guides Association Chapters 3 and 9, https://www.instagram.com/antigua_guides/ took part in the Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste workshops. It is a hands-on environmental education programme hosted by the West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation and made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Sandals Foundation https://sandalsfoundation.org/
What began as a single classroom conversation about plastic pollution grew into poetry and presentations, beach cleanups, upcycling of waste plastic, and a bench donation and Ocean Lovers Pledge ceremony that left everyone in the room proud of this wonderful team of young environmentalists. Here’s how it all came together.
Session One: Planting the Seed
Every movement starts with awareness, and that’s precisely where Ocean Love began. In the programme’s very first session, the Girl Guides gathered to learn about the dangers of plastic pollution, not as some distant, abstract issue, but as something that touches their daily lives directly, from the fish on their dinner plates to the water flowing from their taps. The energy in the room was immediately clear. The Girl Guides were attentive, curious, and full of questions, eager to understand exactly how their everyday choices influence plastic pollution and the health of the ocean around them.
At the heart of the session was a simple but powerful framework: the 4Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Rather than presenting these as abstract rules, we worked with the Girl Guides to unpack what each principle could look like in real life: at home, at school, and within their wider communities. The discussion sparked genuine curiosity, and by the end of the session, the Girl Guides weren’t just informed; they were ready to think about what they could do about plastic pollution. Before they left, each Girl Guide was handed an assignment: put the 4Rs into practice and come back ready to share what they’d discovered. It was a small ask with a big goal: turning knowledge into habit, and habit into change and protection of the oceans.
Session Two: When Learning Becomes Performance
If the first session planted a seed, the second is where it burst into full bloom. The Girl’s Guides returned not just with completed assignments, but with something far more powerful: creativity. Through original poems, songs, skits, and an inspiring PowerPoint presentation, the Girl Guides took ownership of everything they’d learned about Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. They didn’t just explain why these actions matter; they showed how each one fits into daily life, in their own words and on their own terms.
One group, Blues Clues, captured the message beautifully with their poem:
Stop buying junk, just say REFUSE,
If you don’t need it, what’s the use?
REDUCE the pile, keep it small,
We don’t need to shop at every mall.
REUSE that bottle, don’t throw it away,
Fix your old knick-knacks, and make them stay.
Then RECYCLE the scraps when you’re finally done,
Doing our part until the battle is won.
Earth’s getting hot, it’s not a vibe,
The 4R’s keep the world alive.
Their creativity, confidence, and understanding of the topic were evident in every line. It was powerful to see them take ownership of the message and translate it into action, proving that small, intentional changes can have a lasting impact on our environment.

Session Three: From Learning to Action
By the third session, it was time to move from the classroom to the Ocean Love workshop. The day began with a beach cleanup in Falmouth, where the Girl Guides were handed gloves and garbage bags. Working together along the shoreline, they collected plastic waste, experiencing up close how pollution affects the coastal environments and marine life they’d been learning about. There’s no substitute for that kind of hands-on understanding, and the teamwork and energy on display were a powerful reminder that meaningful change often starts with simple, consistent action.
From the beach, the group headed to the Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste workshop, where things got even more hands-on. The Girl Guides were introduced to plastic upcycling machines and learned about the different types of plastic, including which materials can be repurposed rather than left to end up in a landfill or, worse, back in the ocean. Then came the highlight of the day: each Girl Guide got the chance to operate the machines themselves, transforming waste plastic into their very own sea creature. Watching their curiosity light up as they followed the journey from collected plastic to finished product captured exactly what this programme is about: educating, empowering, and equipping young people with real tools to make a difference.

Session Four: A Pledge for the Future
Every great journey deserves a meaningful send-off, and the final Ocean Love session delivered exactly that. This closing gathering combined two special moments: a Bench Donation and the Ocean Lovers Pledge Giving Ceremony. The donated bench, crafted in the NO Plastic NO Waste workshop by Billy, the founder of the WISH Foundation and the intern Kaemoy, now stands as a permanent, physical symbol of sustainability. A lasting reminder that plastic waste can be transformed into something purposeful. The bench is made from 20,000 bottle caps, which otherwise would have ended up in the landfill or in the ocean.
During the ceremony, each Girl Guide received an official Ocean Lovers certificate and took a formal pledge to protect the oceans. That pledge wasn’t just symbolic; it came with real commitments. They committed to collecting plastic waste, cutting back on single-use plastics, making more conscious purchasing decisions, and reusing materials whenever possible. These aren’t just words on a certificate. They’re promises that will shape how these young women move through the world going forward.
Watching the Girl Guides step forward one by one to receive their certificates was both a proud and genuinely emotional moment. Their journey from a first lecture about plastic pollution to cleaning beaches, operating upcycling machines, and finally pledging to live more sustainably reflects exactly the kind of transformation this programme was designed to inspire.
