Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste program inspires the next generation of Ocean Stewards.
Protecting our oceans starts with education, and the students of Cobbs Cross Primary School have proven that young people can make a big difference when they’re given the knowledge and opportunity to act.
As part of the Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste Programme, Grade Four students embarked on an inspiring environmental journey that combined classroom learning, creative expression, beach conservation, plastic upcycling, and community action. Throughout the programme, they discovered how small everyday choices can help reduce plastic pollution and protect the beautiful marine environment of Antigua and Barbuda.
Their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment remind us that today’s students are tomorrow’s environmental leaders.
Learning About Ocean Conservation and Plastic Pollution
Our first visit to Cobbs Cross Primary School was filled with excitement from the moment we stepped into the classroom. The Grade Four students welcomed us with smiles, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn.
Living near the coastline, many students already enjoyed swimming, sailing, and spending time by the sea. This strong connection to the ocean made discussions about marine conservation and plastic pollution especially meaningful.
During our interactive guest lecture, students explored the 4Rs of Sustainability:
- Refuse
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
Together, we discussed how simple daily habits, such as refusing single-use plastics, reducing plastic waste, reusing everyday items, and recycling, can have a lasting positive impact on our oceans.
By the end of the session, students were already brainstorming ideas for their presentations and looking forward to putting their new knowledge into practice.
To encourage real-world action, every student participated in the Plastic Bottle Challenge, collecting plastic bottle caps from their homes, school, and community to fill a five-gallon container. The challenge demonstrated how small individual actions can create significant environmental change when everyone works together.
Students Bring Ocean Love to Life
When we returned for the next session, the students amazed us with their creativity.
Instead of simply talking about environmental responsibility, they used music, art, poetry, and drama to share what they had learned about protecting the ocean.
The classroom came alive with:
- A heartfelt song celebrating their love for the ocean
- Colourful posters showing practical ways to use the 4Rs every day
- An original poem encouraging environmental responsibility
- A lively skit demonstrating the harmful effects of littering and plastic pollution
Each presentation reflected thoughtful learning, teamwork, and genuine passion for protecting the environment.
Their creativity showed that learning becomes even more powerful when students work as a team and are encouraged to express ideas in their own unique ways.
Beach Clean-Up and Plastic Recycling Workshop at Falmouth
One of the most exciting parts of the program was a full day of hands-on learning at Falmouth, the home base of the Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste workshop.
Students were divided into two groups, allowing everyone to experience both a beach clean-up and a plastic upcycling workshop before switching activities. Working together, the students collected more litter than any other school participating in the program had gathered during a clean-up. Their determination highlighted just how committed they are to keeping Antigua and Barbuda’s beaches clean and protecting marine ecosystems from plastic pollution.
Following the clean-up, students discovered that plastic waste can become a valuable resource rather than a problem.
During the Plastic Upcycling Workshop, they learned how recycled plastic is transformed into new products using specialised recycling equipment made by the company Plastic Preneur www.plasticpreneur.com
Guided through every stage of the process, students experienced:
- Learning about types of plastic
- Grinding plastic into small pieces
- Melting recycled plastic
- Moulding plastic into colourful sea creatures
Each student proudly took home the sea creature they created, a memorable reminder that recycling can be creative, practical, and fun. This hands-on experience helped students understand the importance of the circular economy, where materials are reused instead of discarded, reducing waste and protecting our oceans.

Turning Plastic Waste into Something Meaningful
The Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste program concluded with one of its most rewarding moments.
The West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation’s Board proudly donated a recycled plastic bench to Cobbs Cross Primary School.
Made entirely from an average of 20,000 waste bottle caps, the bench serves as a lasting reminder that waste can be transformed into something useful, beautiful, and long-lasting. Every day, students will see and use the bench, reinforcing the message that sustainability isn’t just something we learn; it’s something we live.
During the closing ceremony, students also received their Ocean Lovers Pledges, recognising their commitment to becoming ambassadors for ocean conservation and environmental protection.
Building Environmental Ambassadors for the Future
The Ocean Love NO Plastic NO Waste Program is about much more than reducing plastic waste. It inspires young people to think critically, solve problems creatively, work together, and become active members of their communities.
The Grade Four students of Cobbs Cross Primary School have shown that age is no barrier to making a positive impact.
They are already becoming role models for their families, classmates, and communities, helping build a cleaner, healthier future for Antigua and Barbuda.
